DHB hikes Ohlone Wilderness Trail

A few days ago, fellow geocacher GeoRedheads and I hiked the Ohlone Wilderness Trail, from the Del Valle Reservoir 10 miles SE of Livermore to the Sunol Regional Park headquarters. Total distance: 36.3 km, (22.55 miles). Total ascent: 1835 meters (6020 ft). What a great (although quite arduous) hike!

Here is a map of the

Mom and Dad in Switzerland

Mom and I just returned from an enjoyable trip to Switzerland. I gave some talks in Zurich (hosted by the University of Zurich and ETH-Zurich), Mom visited sights in Zurich, and both of us traveled to Basel and Lucerne. Here are some photos.

Zurich and Munich

I just completed a trip to Zurich, Switzerland and Munich, Germany.

Zurich, situated on lovely lake Zurich, is ranked among the world’s most livable cities (2nd, 7th, 11th, depending on which survey).

Munich is a very nice city near the southern border of Germany. I happened to be here during the annual “Octoberfest” celebration

Mom and I just returned from a trip to Italy, where I attended a workshop on high-performance computing in Cagliari (south end of Sardinia Island), after which we went to Rome for five days, with a one-day side trip to Pompeii (about 150 miles south).

Rome is an unforgettable experience. You haven’t lived until you

The great Bailey swimming pool project

As you know, it has become necessary for us to completely refurbish our swimming pool. The project is now done, although we had to place our plans for the swim party on hold for two weeks or so, while we wait for the chemicals to be balanced and the plastered to be cured. Here are

Venice and Milan

When you get off the train at Venice (Venezia in Italian), you step into a completely different world. To begin with, there are no cars, not even any motorcycles; only motorboats plying the numerous large and small canals. What’s more, the entire city (at least four square miles) consists of 600-year-old buildings built near the

Bertinoro and Florence

First stop on our trip, after landing in Milan, was to take a train trip to Bertinoro, a medieval castle dating from the 10th century (yes that is more than 1000 years old), where our conference was held. On Tuesday, the conference had a field trip to visit nearby Ravenna, where a Christian cathedral dates
