David and Ray Engstrom go backpacking in Sierras

Those of you who have lived here in Alamo will remember our friend and neighbor Ray Engstrom. He and David went backpacking in the Sierras over the past three days. Our original plans had to be scrapped, due to very high snow in the Sierras (and a mishap with a blow-out tire), so we started

Baileys celebrate!

Diane, as we noted in the previous post, has graduated from Stanford Law School and now official has the title “Juris Doctor”. Diane also received her “endowment” at the LDS temple in Oakland on Saturday. Michelle is pregnant and we gave her a mini-baby shower. And Sunday was Father’s Day!

With so much to celebrate,

Diane is a Juris Doctor

Today was Diane’s graduation from Stanford Law School. Not only is it Diane’s last day at Stanford campus, but it will be our last graduation until one of the grandkids finishes! It was a great ceremony, with some great speeches. And Diane was very happy. Here are some photos

Baileys conquer Angel’s Landing

Anyone who has visited Zion National Park will remember Angel’s Landing, a razor-thin mountain of rock that juts up above the Big Bend, across the river from the Great White Throne and the Weeping Rock Waterfall. In one of the first explorations of Zion Canyon in 1916, Frederick Fisher exclaimed, “only an angel could land

Our kitchen remodel is done!

As most of you are aware, last August Linda and I discovered a “problem” in our kitchen — buckling in the hardwood floor, among other things. A plumber friend found that the outlet hose of our dishwasher had been eaten by a hungry rat, and in addition to the water damage on the floor, there

But we try anyway. Yes, it really is very nice here in sunny San Diego. The heavy rains are gone, and Christmas is lovely.

Here are some photos we took. Please join in and add some Christmas photos of your own!

Hiking duo conquers Mt Dana and Mono Pass

On Aug 23 Michelle and I hiked to the top of Mt Dana in Yosemite, which at 13,075 ft is the second-highest mountain in Yosemite (after Mt Lyell). It is a difficult hike, almost as challenging as Half Dome, in part because of the higher elevation (the entire hike is well above the elevation of

The 400,000-pounder that got away

Linda and I went whale watching off Monterey Bay today. Because of a bumper crop of krill in the region of the “Grand Canyon” of Monterey Bay, an unusually large number of whales have come to the area. We took one of the whale-watching tour boats from Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey to see the sights.

60-year-old grandmother hikes to top of jagged Sierra Buttes

Yup. Linda and I hiked to the top of a very dramatic-looking, craggy mountain peak in Northern California known as Sierra Buttes. It was a lovely day, and a lovely hike. Here are some photos:

Sierra Buttes from the road, on our way to the trailhead: Photo Close-up shot of summit — note there is
