INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE TAHOE HOME
Updated: 2 July 2025

We hope you enjoy your stay. We ask your assistance in maintaining this lovely cabin in top-notch condition.

GENERAL RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. USE ALL HOUSE FACILITIES, INCLUDING SPORTS EQUIPMENT, AT YOUR OWN RISK (see below).
  2. Prior to visit, please call or text one of us to obtain permission and to confirm that the alarm system has been deactivated. Also, call or text us when you leave to confirm that the house is secured.
  3. NO parties of any sort. Please be quiet, especially after 10:00 pm.
  4. NO alcohol, tobacco, vaping or drugs anywhere on the property (except, of course, medically prescribed drugs).
  5. NO fires or barbecues anywhere on the property, except in the gas barbecue on the upper balcony.
  6. NO trash on the street overnight, except in the bear-proof box or in the blue-top recycle container (see below).
  7. NO parking on the street if there is snow or any chance of snow. During summer months, you may park on either side of the street, but do not park in front of the homes or driveways of neighbors on our side of the street.
  8. Lock all doors when not in the house, including the downstairs side door and the sliding bedroom doors. Call or text us if you have forgotten the code.
  9. Any visitors or guests must be pre-approved by us. At least one of the Bailey adults must be present during the entire duration of the visit, unless approved by us.
  10. Please remove shoes when entering the house.
  11. Please keep the kitchen area clean. Please immediately clean any microwave spills or splatters. Do not take food or drink out of the kitchen, into the TV area or downstairs.
  12. We recommend that you use the the Rodent Defense spray (on shelf in garage) on the underside wheel wells of vehicles parked in the driveway or on the street.
  13. Usage of the cleaning service is optional for visits by a subset of the family with six or fewer persons, but if more than six persons will visit, or if any non-family guests will be present, the cleaning service is required. Call us for details.
  14. Please contact us immediately if any maintenance problems arise, or if you have any questions about facilities.
  15. When you leave, please complete all items under CHECKOUT.

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS:

SECURITY SYSTEM:
Normally, we disable the alarm system remotely before visits. If, for some reason, the alarm system (inside door to garage) is active when you enter the door, immediately enter the four-digit security code, then press “Off.” If this is done correctly, the beeping sound should cease, and the display of the security system should say “Disabled ready.” If there is a problem, please call us immediately.

DIGITAL DOOR LOCKS:
Open the garage door by entering the five-digit garage code and then pressing “Enter” (possibly more than once). To enter the house itself (either via the front door or through the garage), press the “Schlage” logo on the deadbolt keypad, then enter the six-digit door code. The deadbolt should then open; if not, then press “Schlage” and re-enter the six-digit code. If there is a problem, please call us immediately.

SECURITY CAMERAS:
Two security cameras monitor the exterior front and rear of the house, and one monitors the upstairs interior family room area. Please do not disconnect these cameras. We remotely power down the family room camera when someone is using the home.

HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING:
The heating-A/C thermostat is on the wall near the master bedroom. It is easiest to control the system using the Resideo app on one’s smartphone, or via the Apple Home app — see instructions at THERMOSTAT. NOTE: If you use the A/C during the summertime, first check that the cover has been removed from the outside A/C unit. If you prefer, we can set thermostat remotely for you.

INTERNET:
The house has 600+ Mb/s WiFi, with mesh routers both upstairs and downstairs. Please do not unplug any of these routers. The network name (SSID) and password are the same as in the other house. If you do not know them, send us a text. Call us if you have any difficulties.

TV EQUIPMENT:
Full instructions are in the top drawer below each TV, or at TV-VIDEO. Please do not change system settings or connect other devices, except as described in the instructions. You are free to use our Apple+, BritBox, Disney+, Netflix and Prime Video accounts for streaming, although please call or text us if you wish to view a show that charges a fee.

COMPUTER EQUIPMENT:

  1. Computer monitors and speakers: Three 27-inch computer monitors are available: an Apple Studio Monitor with 5120×2880 resolution at the larger upstairs desk, an Asus monitor with 1920×1080 resolution at the smaller upstairs desk, and a Dell monitor with 2560×1440 resolution in the upstairs master bedroom. A wireless mouse and set of computer speakers are in the cabinet below the upstairs TV.
  2. HP color laser printer/scanner: To use, first turn the printer on (front panel) if it is not already on. Then when you are logged into the house WiFi from either a Mac or a PC, you should be able to connect to the printer (HP LaserJet model M479fdw), using the standard MacOS or Windows “add printer” facility. If a PIN is needed, look on the printer’s display. Extra paper is in the lower right-hand desk drawer. If you install the HP Smart app on your Mac or PC, you can also scan with the printer.
  3. Power strips, Apple chargers, batteries, HDMI cables, Ethernet cables, USB cables and webcams: Many items of this sort in the bottom drawer below the upstairs TV. Feel free to use any of these items, but please return them to the drawer before you leave.
  4. Folding tables: There is a 4-foot folding table in the upstairs master bedroom, and an 8-foot folding table either in the main entertainment area or in the downstairs king closet.
  5. GPS receiver: A Garmin 64s hiking GPS receiver, which displays streets, trails, topographic lines and geocaches, is in the drawer below the upstairs TV. The on/off button is on the side. If you use this more than briefly, please replace the two AA batteries and return it to the drawer when done. If you have questions, call us or see the Garmin 64s manual online.

KITCHEN:

  1. Microwave: Press “Cook time,” then turn the knob to adjust the time, then press the knob to set, then press the knob again or “Start” to begin. PLEASE immediately clean any spills or splatters.
  2. Stove: The dials are self-explanatory. Be careful not to leave unlit gas running. Please make sure all units are off when done.
  3. Dishwasher: First fill the detergent bin with liquid dishwasher detergent (under sink). Press “Select cycle” until the display says “Auto Sense,” and select “Heated dry” if that light is not already on. Then press “Start” twice and close the door. The outside front panel light should be steady orange, indicating that the cycle has started. Note: If you open the door to insert more dishes, or if the front panel light is blinking orange, then open the door, press “Start” and close door to continue. The cycle is complete when the front panel light is solid green.
  4. Food: Feel free to use food, drug and first aid items in the pantry, cabinets and refrigerator, but please replenish these items if they are missing, nearly empty or expired. Use the large sealed plastic containers in the pantry and cabinets for pasta, rice, flour and similar items, and use clips to secure potato chips and the inner liners of cereal boxes. Do not leave any open food items in the pantry and cabinets.
  5. Cleaning: Liquid dishwasher detergent and liquid dish detergent are under the sink; other cleaning supplies are in the coat closet and the laundry room. Be especially gentle when cleaning the range, microwave, dishwasher and refrigerator — use only a soft cloth and detergent for these.

GARAGE:
To open the garage door from the outside, type the five-digit code, then press Enter. To close the door, simply press Enter (possibly more than once).

TRASH:
Two trash receptacles (one for landfill trash and one for clean recyclables) are under the kitchen counter by the sink, and smaller receptacles are in bathrooms and bedrooms. Plastic liners are in the pantry. Landfill trash is picked up every Friday, while recyclables and yard waste are collected on alternate Fridays — see Trash schedule. Place trash as follows:

  • Landfill trash: Place bags of landfill trash in the bear-proof box near the street; acceptable landfill items.
  • Recyclables: Place clean recyclables (NO plastic bags) in the blue-top container on the northwest side of the house; acceptable recyclable items.
  • Yard waste: Place yard waste (NO food, containers or plastic bags) in the green-top container on the northwest side of the house; one extra container is behind the fence. If these two are full, additional yard waste may be placed in large paper bags, on a shelf in the garage; acceptable yard waste items.

DO NOT leave any household trash outside, except in the bear-proof box or in the blue-top recycle container.

SNOW:
A snow removal service will clear the driveway and walkway after major snowstorms, but for smaller snowfalls, please use the snow shovel in the garage. Please also clear snow from the upstairs balcony, to avoid excessive weight and other problems. DO NOT park on the street if there is snow or any chance of snow — your vehicle may be ticketed, towed or damaged.

POLLEN:
Pollen from conifer trees is particularly heavy during June and early July. Keep all windows and doors closed during this time. Feel free to use the A/C as needed. Use the blower, in the upstairs coat closet, to clear the stairs, decks and driveway.

EMERGENCY LIGHTS:
In case of a power outage, there are battery-powered LED lanterns and flashlights on the bottom shelf at the top of the stairs. Lift the handles and pull up to turn on. Each bedroom also has an LED flashlight.

GAS FIREPLACE:
The switch to turn the fireplace on/off is on the right-side wall near the computer equipment. We suggest that you use the fireplace sparingly, because it is not as efficient as the furnace, and it leaves the downstairs colder relative to upstairs.

BARBECUE:
The barbecue on the upstairs balcony uses the home’s natural gas. To use, first turn the red supply valve to the direction parallel to the feed line from the outside wall. When finished, turn the red supply valve off (perpendicular direction).

SPORTS EQUIPMENT:
USE THE SPORTS EQUIPMENT AT YOUR OWN RISK — we cannot be responsible for any mishaps or injuries. Please let us know if any of this equipment is missing or not in good condition. Tahoe basin law requires that any child riding a kayak or paddleboard must wear a safety vest, and any adult must either wear a safety vest or at least have one on the kayak or paddleboard. If you use a paddleboard you must use one of the two ankle harnesses available in the garage. Please use the two lightweight graphite paddles only for the paddleboards. Instructions for mounting the paddleboards and kayaks on top of a car or SUV are listed in a paper attached to the paddleboard/kayak rack in the garage.
