Linda and I went whale watching off Monterey Bay today. Because of a bumper crop of krill in the region of the “Grand Canyon” of Monterey Bay, an unusually large number of whales have come to the area. We took one of the whale-watching tour boats from Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey to see the sights. We were not disappointed — we saw at least 30 individual whales, mostly Humpback but at least one Blue whale. Adult Humpbacks are typically 13 m (40 ft) long and weigh 35,000 kg (75,000 lb). Adult Blue whales are typically 32 m (105 ft) and 180,000 kg (400,000 lb). Here are some photos (sorry for the lack of color — it was a grey day in Monterey, unlike sunny Alamo where we live).
